Dallas , Texas Apple iMac Startup Issue flashing Question Mark folder

One of the issues that Apple users may come across is a startup problem with their iMac. There are a few things that can cause this problem, and luckily, there are also a few things that can be done to fix it. In this article, we'll explore some of the possible causes of this issue, as well as some of the solutions.

One possible cause of an iMac startup problem is an issue with the disk. If the disk is damaged, it may not be able to boot up properly. To fix this, you can try to repair the disk with Disk Utility. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the disk. Another possible cause of an iMac startup problem is an issue with the firmware. The firmware is the software that tells the computer how to start up. If it's damaged, the computer may not be able to start up properly. To fix this, you can try to update the firmware.

A folder with the question mark sign and flashing folder means there is no longer a working operating system or it is unavailable. Sometimes the failed hard drive is the culprit of this issue.

These is the steps you want to try if you have this issue:

  1. Remove all the peripherals, USB, and power cable and press and had the power bottom in the back for 20 seconds
  2. Reset the NVRAM, for that you can shut down the computer, turn it on, and immediately hold option, command, p, and R together.
  3. Use disk utility to repair your mac and see if it fixes it. You can press command and R at the same time to go to recovery mode and open up the disk utility.
  4. If it does not solve the issue, try to wipe your hard drive and reinstall the operating system in it.

How to use Disk Utility to repair the Startup issue.

Disk utility is the preinstalled program on the iMac, you can find it in the application folders in the finders and it will be inside the utilities or you can simply use your finder to locate it. It will show the list of the hard drive connected to the computer. It is used to repair or erase the hard drive. In this case, since you can not boot to the computer, you can not navigate to the disk utility this way. You have to use macOS Recovery to use these features:

Running first AID method: Do not lose data

  1. The first step is to figure out if your Mac is intel for apple silicon. For that, you can go to the apple serial number checker and check if you do not know.

- Apple Silicon: Turn your Mac down, remove all the peripherals, then power for 10 seconds to drain all the charges there and then plug in the power cable and keep holding the power bottom until you see iMac turning on and then click click on the gear icon(Option keys) and then hit continue.

  1. You may be asked for the password if you have the firmware lock or the FileVault is turned on. You can type in that when asked.
  2. From the next Windows, you will see multiple options: Restore from time machine, reinstall macOS Monterey, safari, and disk utility. Now you can choose the disk utility
  3. Now select your disk in the disk utility.
  4. Now select each partition and disk and run first aid on the disk
  5. Repair the volumes, then the containers, and then the disk. You can select each of them and then choose the first aid bottom(the one with the stethoscope) and run it. This process will try to repair the disk
  6. After it is done, close down everything and restart the computer.
